MDC Sports Swimsuit Care
Start with a good quality swimsuit
Quality TYR and Aqua Sphere Lycra swimsuits provide ideal fit and retention in vibrant colors. They hold their shape better, look better, and in the case of our women’s fitness suits provide extra tummy control and bust support, making them an excellent choice for a swimsuit. Another option is reversible swimsuits. Reversible suit have two complete layers of material offering great support and increasing the life of the suit.
Look for swimsuits that last longer
Pool chemicals are harsh and take their toll on swimsuits. Our manufacturers TYR and Aqua Sphere have developed chlorine resistant fabrics that last three times as long. If you wear through suits quickly, poly suits are a better option!
Beware of hot tubs
Hot tubs are extremely hard on swimsuits and will destroy them quickly. The only suits that have a chance of surviving hot tubs are 100% polyester. To keep your suit looking its best wash it using McNett’s Wetsuit Shampoo as soon as possible after going in a hot tub.
Hand wash your swimsuit every time
Gently hand wash your suit in the sink to remove chlorine, saltwater, and body oils after every use. A water rinse does not remove chemicals or oils from your suit. Most shampoos can cause fading and break down the suit material resulting in streaks down the front and back of the suit. Swimmers recommend McNett’s Wetsuit Shampoo for hand washing your suit. Never use a washing machine, they break down the Lycra and ruin some of the bra cups that are sewn into many swimsuits.
Dry your swimsuit away from sun and never put in the dryer
Hang your suit indoors to dry. The sun and dryers are hard on the Lycra and spandex in your suit. The sun speeds fading and both cause the breakdown of the elastic quality of your swimwear.
Buy a second suit
It’s best to give your swimsuits at least 24 hours to dry before reusing. Spandex is a memory yarn and your swimsuit needs 24 hrs to go back to its original shape. Without this time your suit will stretch out rapidly.
Be careful where you sit, lay, and lean
Pool sides and many decks are rough to prevent slipping. Although it may not feel rough to the touch, your suit can get snagged and damaged. Sitting or laying on a towel will help your suit last longer.
