Part 1: Classroom & Confined Water
This is the first of two steps necessary to achieve your PADI Open Water Diver certification. Once you have completed this portion of your training, your next step will be four open water training dives. MDC Sports conducts these dives on our winter dive trips and during the summer months at a nearby lake.
Prerequisites: Must be 10 years or older. (If you are between 10 and 14 or have a child these ages, please see our Junior Open Water Scuba Diver flyer). Students need to be comfortable in water. Parental consent required for students under age 18.
Price: $345.00 Option 1 & 2: Book & Video/DVD or CD-ROM independent study
Price includes instruction; pool fee; use of scuba equipment; PADI Open Water Diver Instructional Materials; PADI Adventure Log; PADI eRDPml (Multilevel Recreational Dive Planner). Price does not include use of mask, fins, snorkel and boots.
Price: $295.00 PADI Online Training Completion Begin your training online at PADI.COM, and complete the Part-1 training with MDC Sports. Price includes instruction; pool fee; use of scuba equipment; PADI Open Water Diver Instructional Materials; PADI Adventure Log; PADI eRDPml (Multilevel Recreational Dive Planner). Price does not include PADI Online Class fee or use of mask, fins, snorkel and boots.
Make up pool sessions are available at $40/day. A $25 Processing Fee will be assessed for each change in the class or cancellation. A class cancelled less than one week prior to the class will be assessed a Late Cancellation Fee of $125. Once a class has been changed, it cannot be cancelled.
Schedule: Sign-up today because you may need additional practice time master your scuba skills. 2 full days at the Rochester Recreation Center in both classroom and pool.
Saturday: Meet at 8:45am at Rec. Center Door #5** for classroom. Pool 3-8pm.
Sunday: Meet at 7:45am at Rec. Center Door #5** for Pool, Classroom 1:15-5pm.
**Door #5 is on rear of building (West side) and is the North Door.
What to Do:
1. Sign up at MDC Sports.
2. Do your homework! (Independent study averages 8-10 hours)
3. Get Physician’s approval before orientation session if any of the items apply to you. Padi Medical Questionaire

6. Schedule your Open Water training dives.

Schedule: Schedule your class as soon as possible because extra pool time is occasionally required for some students to master their diving skills. Additionally, a two-hour orientation needs to be individually scheduled prior to course weekend.

What to Do: 1. Sign up at MDC Sports.
- Fill out PADI Medical Statement, Liability Release, and Statement of Understanding in your student folder (folder stays at MDC Sports).
- Pick up student materials for independent study. Option 1 students also need to check outVideos or DVD. PADI Open Water Diver
- Schedule private 2-hour orientation to determine your equipment needs.
2. Do your homework! (Independent study averages 8-10 hours)
- Watch all five sections of video.
- Read all five modules of the course.
- Read PADI Recreational Dive Planner Instructions for Use booklet.
- Complete all five knowledge reviews found at the end of each module.
3. Get Physician’s approval before orientation session if any of the items apply to you.
- Physician must correctly complete, sign, and date PADI Medical Statement on back.
4. Attend your scheduled orientation session:
- Bring your PADI Medical Statement if physician’s approval was required.
- Bring your completed knowledge reviews.
- Return the PADI Open Water Diver Videos or DVD.
- Buy or rent your mask, fins, snorkel and boots.
5. Go to class at MDC Sports
- Class starts promptly at 8:45 Saturday am, 7:45 Sunday am.
- Bring your entire pack of student materials. Bring swimsuit and towel.
- Class ends in the Rec Center pool.
- We will reschedule your class if you have not completed your independent study work.
6. Return rental equipment on Monday after class. (Late equipment will be charged $10 per day)
- Rinse your equipment.
- Have staff check in equipment.
7. Schedule your Open Water training dives.
